The location for Brickscape 2019 is the basement of 210 Hale St in Downtown Charleston. Built in 1906, the building has housed a telephone company, an engraving business, WV Deptartment of Health and Human Resources, The Charleston Gazette, and the National Bank of Commerce. Most recently, it was occupied by the Girl Scouts for 30 years until it was vacated and recently renovated. The building is currently owned by a real estate company which occupies the first floor. The top floors are rental event spaces, while the basement is currently undergoing basic renovations to become an artist project space. The renovations will be complete prior to the residency making Brickscape the first art project to take place there. The building is now referred to as The Hale Street Center.
Hale Street is a 3-block street in the heart of downtown. There are several galleries, a tattoo shop, antique shop, wine bar and various office spaces along the street. It is quaint most days, but becomes one of the liveliest streets during the city’s ArtWalk nights.
